Just as God can use ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things, God uses ordinary events, too. Sometimes the ordinary events are there for us to recharge, to reground ourselves, and to reconnect.
After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days. – John 2:12, ESV
After the wedding, we see Jesus returning back home. He goes home and hangs out with family and spends a few days there. John doesn’t record anything of significance happening specifically.
In our lives, we need quiet moments. We can’t operate at full speed all the time. In the Old Testament we learn that God made the Sabbath for man to rest. God knows we can’t go and go and go.
We see in Scripture where Jesus takes time out to rest, to get quiet, to get alone with the Father. Throughout His ministry He gave us our example of how to live. In this He is showing us that we need this kind of normal, ordinary time as well.
If you’re like me, taking down time is hard. I want to keep doing things. I’m known for my motto, “Sleep is for mere mortals.” However, I can’t operate like this indefinitely. None of us can. Don’t neglect down time. Intentionally take time for quiet moments. There’s nothing wrong with ordinary. Take time for it.
